About Amersfoort

With over 130,000 citizens Amersfoort is one of the 20 largest cities of the Netherlands. It is a versatile city with a variety of architecture, history, art, culture and nature. The special districts as the well-known architectural Kattenbroek, the environmental friendly district Nieuwland and the historic centre make a visit extremely worthwhile.

The historic inner city of Amersfoort has a Medieval pattern of streets and squares, where you will find over 380 monuments, from remarkable churches and museums to city walls and gates. A string of unique houses ‘muurhuizen’ is part of the heart shaped inner city. Just outside the old city walls you can relax in the ‘Zocherplantsoen’, a green area stretching alongside the city can.

The nickname for Amersfoort, Keistad (boulder-city), originates in the Amersfoortse Kei, a 9-tonne (19,842 lb) boulder that was dragged from the Soest moors into the city in 1661 by 400 people because of a bet between two landowners. The people got their reward when the winner bought everyone beer and pretzels. Other nearby towns then nicknamed the people of Amersfoort Keihoofd (boulder-head). This story embarrassed the inhabitants, and they buried the boulder in the city, but after it was found again in 1903 it was placed in a prominent spot as a monument

Attractions
